Hotel Update:

The Warwick Hotel is having a special $99 rate that weekend. It's their regular rate, so no need to have special codes or secret passwords. It is also within walking distance of the Turnverein, which is perfect for out of town guests.

Workshop descriptions are also up for your viewing pleasure. We are still working on finalizing our DJs for the weekend so stay tuned for that. But don't delay as registration may close before the big weekend due to the size of our venue and our desire to maintain Jammin' as an intimate lindy experience. And for you beginners, keep in mind that the Beginner Track is limited to 10 leads and 10 follows, so register early!

Jammin' on the James

This year (our sixth) we offer something familiar and something new. The familiar is that we have the return of Naomi Uyama and Mike Faltesek as instructors. The new is that this year we are excited to welcome for the first time Nina Gilkenson and Peter Strom! All four will team up to teach our intermediate and beginner tracks. That's right, we have the return of the beginner track for the those new to lindy and those who may still be unsure if they're ready to move to an intermediate level class. In an effort to let the beginners absorb as much as possible, we're keeping the class sizes small and only having two classes each day. And the beginners will benefit from the instruction of the same world class instructors who are teaching the intermediate classes!

Once again we are putting the focus on our local musical talent at our dances. Jammin' favorites, Gypsy Roots (Hot Club of France-style hot jazz) make a return appearance as does Swiss Swank Account, although this year we're going with a small group (sextet) version as a change of pace. And of course we wrap up the weekend with the trad jazz sounds of the Doctors of Jazz. Plus the popular late night dances with quality DJs (TBA), free refreshments to keep you going, and some downright nice and friendly dancers from all over!

The weekend schedule and instructor bios are up on the website. Workshop descriptions will be posted soon and registration will open sometime in late August. Please save the date and join us!

This month for our Jam Cellar workshop we have the return of Lindy Phil Onochie who will regale us with tales of the dance floor that will make your head spin. And he may teach us a thing or two that will improve our dancing!

Afterwards he will stick around and be one of our guest DJs spinning a set along with yours truly and one William Spiedel from Virginia Beach. Phil and Bill will also compete in this month's Iron DJ death match. Be sure to provide ideas for the secret theme that the boys will have to play to during the match. We will also have a going away jam for a Second Satuday favorite who is moving to the Left Coast. And who knows (I sure don't), there may even be a birthday jam so come on out and join in on the fun!

Also, we appreciate everyone's understanding and patience regarding the enforcement of the room capacity. I have been assured that wheels are in motion to determine the feasibility of getting a new exit installed. The new owners are very motivated folks and are focused on making it happen so keep your fingers crossed!

Amy Givler won this past Saturday's Iron DJ title over a spirited challenge from Audrey Anderson. The secret theme selected was Food-Based Songs. I think Audrey may have won if she had managed to find a song about sushi.

Both did a great job. Thanks to both! And for the record, Andrew Jaswa took the inaugural Iron DJ title back in May with his set related to the secret theme of Gummi Bears. This, despite his rival, Valerie Hargis, pulling out the Gummi Bear theme song during her set. The decision was made after a one-song sudden death round with a theme of Mom since it was the day before Mother's Day. Thanks to both for being such willing and good guinea pigs...I mean sports!

Come out to Second Saturday next month for another exciting Iron DJ competition!

This month at Second Saturday Swing we have:

1. DJ trio of Andy, Amy, and Audrey. This will also be Audrey's last Second Saturday before she leaves for Japan to teach English so come and wish her a happy sayonara!

2. Amy and Trey will teach the intermediate lesson at 6pm. They'll talk about developing your own style and demonstrate some of the things that they do to make their styles distinctive.

3. The return of Iron DJ with Amy battling Audrey. Start coming up with those theme ideas.

We will also have the new attendance restrictions in place. Remember that we need to keep capacity to 49 folks. If you come after we've reached the limit you can wait until someone leaves for the night. We're still working out how best to monitor this and we thank you for your patience.

Come early and ensure yourself a place! Free refreshments as always. See you there!
